Tuross Lake opened to the sea on Tuesday morning 13th February 2007 with a great rush. The lake had been closed since mid November last year and the level of water in the lake had been falling steadily since then, exposing large areas of sand flats.
With the heavy rain that fell on the previous Saturday evening and Sunday morning Tuross Lake started to rise very quickly and by Monday morning it was coming close to breaking through by itself.
There were several readings of around 130mm of rain fall in the Tuross Head, Potato Point and Bodalla areas with even higher readings, well over 200mm, in the Tuross River catchment areas. Several bridges on the Tuross River were under water making access to Nerrigundah and surrounding areas very difficult.
A little human intervention on Tuesday morning around 6am opened the lake to the sea and it soon became a huge rush of water leaving the lake. By the time your corresspondent was at the lake entrance at 11am it was more than fifty metres wide with huge volumes of water flowing into the sea.
